The pros and cons of OEM parts

Original manufacturers parts When choosing a new replacement part for your vehicle, you have 2 options. You can either buy original parts or you can look at alternative aftermarket brands that could save you a buck. Original equipment manufacturer or OEM parts are the parts made by the manufacturer of the vehicle. They are the exact same as the parts that were in your car when you drove it off the showroom floor. Most manufacturers swear by original parts and will insist that you always use original parts.

Here’s a look at some of the pros and cons for original parts

Pros of OEM parts.

  • Not too many options to confuse you: If you go to the dealership and ask for any part, you will probably get 1 type. You don’t have to worry about assessing different brands and their quality and pricing.

  • Peace of mind: The OEM part should work exactly the same as the one you are replacing with it. You will receive peace of mind that the part is of good quality because it came from the manufacturer.

  • Comes with a warranty: Most vehicle manufacturers slap their parts with, usually, a 1-year warranty so if something goes wrong, it will be replaced. Dealers also back their labour. Cons of OEM parts:

  • More expensive: OEM parts will almost always cost more than aftermarket parts. OEM body parts are usually about 60 percent more expensive than aftermarket parts. The gap in the pricing between aftermarket parts and OEM parts is closing because dealerships are now trying to compete with aftermarket manufacturers.

  • Need to be bought at the dealership: There is a limited number of places where you can buy parts from because you can only find them at the dealer itself. This may mean that you will have to drive quite a distance if you nearest dealership is far away. There are ways that you can order parts online but they could take a while to arrive. You could also get a mechanic at a service centre to order them, but again, it can take a while for the part to arrive. If you need a part urgently, you will have to get it at the dealership.

  • Quality may not be superior: After spending a pretty big chunk of your hard earned cash, you may discover that the part is of poorer quality than an aftermarket part would have been. That is obviously not always the case but it can happen. You may be paying purely for the name brand to appear on your part.
